Northeast Harbor Library “Free for All: The Public Library “ screening
"Free for All: The Public Library" tells the story of the quiet revolutionaries who made a simple idea happen. From the pioneering women behind the “Free Library Movement” to today's librarians who service the public despite working in a contentious age of closures and book bans, meet those who created a civic institution where everything is free and the doors are open to all. (Run Time: 60 min)
Join us for this free advance screening before the film’s PBS premiere in April 2025. Following the screening, Amy Wisehart (NEHL Director, Maine Library Association President) will host a conversation exploring how public libraries shaped the country and continue to be a sanctuary for Americans everywhere, despite the threats to funding the civic institution has faced in recent years.
MDI Historical Society-Join or Die at Reel Pizza
January 25 from 1-3:30pm, at Reel Pizza, we will host a free screening and discussion of the full-length documentary "Join or Die." Follow the half-century story of America's civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam, whose groundbreaking "Bowling Alone" research into America's decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy's present crisis. Neighborhood House Community Cafe
The “Community Cafe” is a unique program offering community luncheons on the first and third Thursday of each month from mid-fall through late spring. Originally started as a simple opportunity to give those around the village and throughout our town an excuse to gather a couple of times a month, the program has grown exponentially over the past decade. In recent years, it is not uncommon to have over 150 guests from across MDI stop by to join us for lunch!
Thanks to the generous support of our local business sponsors, we are able to offer lunches at a suggested donation of just $10, and all seniors are invited to enjoy their meal “on the house.” This year’s Cafe season gets underway on Thursday, October 17th, and will then meet on the first and third Thursday through April 17th.
Northeast Harbor Library : DRJ Community Circle
Community Circles are a space to come together, share and listen to each other around a variety of difficult and sensitive topics so that we may build healthy relationships, understand and support each other while acknowledging differing experiences. Facilitated by Downeast Restorative Justice, each meeting will focus on a different discussion topic guided by the interests of participants and recent events. We’ll meet on the first Thursday of each month, with breaks in April, August, and December; intermittent or occasional participation is welcome.
At the opening of each circle, DRJ’s Restorative Practitioner Kayla Gagnon will introduce Restorative principles & practices to facilitate the circle conversation. There is no expectation to share; showing up to listen is just as valuable.

This 6 week course is designed for a broad range of artistic interests and abilities from beginner to accomplished practitioner to those who want to re-invigorate their interest. Through the medium of pen and ink, we will explore the basic visual elements and principals that are foundational to a comprehensive arts education.
Design competence is essential for success in every activity in the visual arts. It doesn’t matter if your interest is in painting, drawing, graphic design, fashion design, fiber arts, or anything in between, they are all rooted in basic design.,
The first half of the class will be devoted to the presentation and exploration of the visual elements and principals including:, Elements: Line, texture, value, shape, form and space.,
Principals: Balance, contrast, perspective, rhythm/movement, proportion/scale, unity/variety and pattern., Homework assignments will be related to class lectures on the elements and principals., The second half of the class will focus on a pen and ink still-life drawing done over several weeks both in and out of class as well as individual and group critiques.,
The goal of the 6 week class is to develop a critical working knowledge of basic design while simultaneously developing competence with pen and ink and wash drawing. Focusing on ink and wash for the whole course will allow for an in depth and disciplined exploration of the assigned problems. Strong emphasis will be placed on analyzing, simplifying and solving what appear on the surface to be impossible problems with the aim of developing artistic independence and autonomy.
