Acadia National Park was the first national park initially created by private donations of land and the efforts of many foresighted individuals. This legacy of private philanthropy for a public treasure is carried on today by the members and volunteers of Friends of Acadia. Founded in 1986, Friends of Acadia is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the outstanding natural beauty, ecological vitality, and cultural distinctiveness of Acadia National Park and the surrounding communities.
